I stood in the center of the playroom with my arms crossed tightly over my chest. Max was attempting to shrink away into the corner, with his paci dangling uselessly from his lips. He had been told repeatedly that his behavior was unacceptable, yet he had chosen to ignore the boundaries I laid out for him.
I walked towards him and stopped just inches away, towering over his small, cowering frame. “Do you have any idea why you’re sitting in timeout, darling?” I asked, calmly. He tried to mumble something, but I reached down and firmly removed the paci from his mouth. “What have I told you about speaking with your mouth full?” I asked, setting his paci on the high shelf where he couldn’t reach it. His bottom lip trembled, but I remained unmoved. He had prioritized his own selfish impulses over the rules of our household, and the time for coddling had long since passed.
Playroom Temper Tantrum
He looked down at his hands, as his face flushed with a mix of shame and the lingering frustration of a boy who didn’t get his way.
I gestured to the padded chair in the corner. With a heavy, reluctant sigh, he climbed into it, waiting for the lecture that he knew was inevitable. “We’ve already discussed this at length, Max,” I said, in a frustrated tone. “Temper tantrums are for babies. Are you a baby?” He looked at me with wide eyes, shaking his head.
“No, Mama! I’m a big boy!” he screamed. I gave him a stern look that indicated mommy wasn’t interested in his game of fuck around & find out. “You’d best stop screaming at me, unless you’d like to spend the rest of the afternoon in a time out with NO TOYS OR VIDEO GAMES.”
His lip started to tremble again. “Nooooo, Mama! You wouldn’t!” he wailed, as his fists pounded on the chair. I watched him lash out for a moment before issuing his punishment. “You know what Max? I think it’s best if we skip the time out entirely and just go straight to a spanking…”
