I sat in the oversized leather chair and watched Aaron examine the sketchbook I’d brought in. He was a legend. The kind of tattoo artist whose waitlist spanned years! And today, it was finally my turn. “A siren, an anchor, and a stormy sea,” Aaron murmured, as his pale green eyes tracked over my leg. “The detail required for this…it’s going to be steep, Amber. Five thousand per session, at least.”
My stomach dropped. I’d been waiting such a long time for this, but my savings wasn’t even remotely enough…even for just the deposit. I came here hoping for a miracle, or perhaps just a lapse in his legendary professional coldness, but it wasn’t looking good. I had to think of something. Fast! Or else, he would kick me out of the shop as quickly as I had walked in.

“I’m so sorry, Aaron, but I don’t have that kind of cash,” I whispered. I met his gaze, refusing to look away, and my pulse spiked as he dropped his pen.
“Is that so?” he asked, as he stood up and paced around the chair until he was standing directly between my knees. “I don’t do charity, Amber. My time is the most expensive currency in this city.” I reached out to gently brush the ink against his wrist. “I may not have money,” I said, trying to sound sultry instead of nervous. “But I have skin. And I’m willing to settle my debt in any way you see fit.”
Aaron’s eyes darkened, as a predacious grin spread across his lips and his calloused thumb traced the line of my jaw. He didn’t ask for clarification. He simply leaned into my personal space until his breath teased my ear. “A trade,” he rasped, as his hand slid down to rest firmly on my thigh. “I think we can figure out a suitable arrangement.”
He slid his hands under my arms and dragged me from the chair toward the back room. As he locked the door behind us, I knew the tattoo wouldn’t be the only mark left on my body today.
