Sometimes you just have to seize the opportunity when you see it, for who knows when or if you’ll ever see that stranger again.
The Lot lizard, Part 1
It was a cold dark night and I was stranded at the truck stop…. Again. I knew I had to get home but how? I had no money on me, no food, I was starving. All I had was a few cigarettes left in my purse along with some quarters. Gotta think… who to call. I only have so many quarters to rinse. Go into that filthy payphone booth. It smells like a mix of cigarettes, bourbon, and sex. Start dialing….. I can’t even remember the right phone number to call and my cell phone battery is fried. I just feel like crying. Just then an 18-wheeler big rig came rolling into the parking lot. It had flames on the side with pretty neon lights all along the cabinet frame. It pulled up to the front, and out hopped this southern gentleman. He had a cowboy hat on, with cowboy boots made out of gator skin, jeans, and was chewing tobacco. I watched him enter the restaurant at the truck stop. Not sure if he saw me or even noticed me. I waited a few seconds then followed him inside. He was standing laughing with the bartender, as if they had known each other for 20 years. I sat at the other end of the bar. They both stopped laughing and looked over to gawk at me. The bartender came my way: “What’ll be little missy?’’ Just some water please. The Hot cowboy looked over and said: ‘’usually when someone orders water, that means they’re broke.’’ I laughed and blushed, completely embarrassed. He then tipped his hat at me and offered to buy me a drink. A shot of bourbon please, on the rocks. He nodded to the bartender. He then scooted over so we were pressed elbow to elbow. We talked and he made me laugh all night long. Before I knew it, it was last call….
