Leo was a gentle giant, and seeing him in his Halloween costume always brought a fond smile to my face. “All ready, my little T-Rex?” I cooed, adjusting the scales on his neck. He rumbled, a sound that was more purr than roar, and nodded. Decked out in my own witch costume and looking a bit more gothic than glittery, I grabbed his oversized candy bucket.
Our first few houses were normal enough. Leo showed off his stomping gait, polite “trick-or-treats,” and handfuls of candy. But, as we ventured further into the older part of town, the houses became more isolated and the decorations became more…well, authentic. Cobwebs hung thick and real from unkept bushes, and the air grew colder with each step.
A Spooky ABDL Halloween
At one house, a towering Victorian that always went all out for Halloween, the front door creaked open before we even reached the porch. A figure stood silhouetted in the dim light with a shape that seemed to shift and blur at the edges. Leo, usually so boisterous, let out a small whimper and pressed closer to my side.
“Happy Halloween,” a voice rasped, like dry leaves skittering across pavement. It wasn’t the usual cheerful greeting. Leo’s candy bucket remained untouched. He was too frightened by the figure that seemed to lean out of the doorway, beckoning with a skeletal hand.
Leo’s usual excited chatter was replaced by shallow breaths and he bolted down the street without so much as a word, forcing me to run after him (in heels! ack!). At the next house, the candy bowl was filled with what looked suspiciously like dried twigs and shriveled berries. As Leo reached for one, a guttural cackle echoed from the shadows of the porch, and the twigs seemed to writhe in his hand before he snatched his hand back.
The playful innocence of the evening was quickly replaced by a creeping dread. The masks on the other trick-or-treaters seemed less like costumes and more like grimaces of genuine fear. Leo’s large hands were trembling as he gripped my arm, his eyes wide with a terror that was far too real. The night, once filled with the promise of sugary delights, now felt heavy with an ancient, hungry darkness. And all I wanted was to get my big, scared boy home, back into the safety of our warm, brightly lit house.
